وَقَدْ تُشْبَهُ الحَالَةُ الأُخْرَىَ وَبينَهُما

وَقَدْ تُشْبَهُ الحَالَةُ الأُخْرَىَ وَبينَهُما

إذا تَأمَّلْتَ فَرْقٌ عَن سِواكَ خَفِي

إذا تَأمَّلْتَ فَرْقٌ عَن سِواكَ خَفِي

And one state may resemble the other, though between them,

if you reflect, lies a difference hidden from all but you.

فَرُبَّما صَفَّقَ المسرورُ مِن طَرَبٍ

فَرُبَّما صَفَّقَ المسرورُ مِن طَرَبٍ

وَرُبَّما صَفَّقَ المَحزون مِن أَسَفِ

وَرُبَّما صَفَّقَ المَحزون مِن أَسَفِ

For sometimes the joyful one claps out of delight,

and sometimes the sorrowful one claps out of grief.
