وَقَدand indeed كُنتُI was دَهْراًfor a long time لِلمُروءةِfor noble virtue نَاشِداseeking
أُسَائِلُI inquire of عَنهاabout it مَنwhoever أَغارَwent to the lowlands وَأَنْجَداand went to the highlands
And long had I been seeking noble virtue,
asking about it of those who went to lowlands and highlands.
وَأَسمَعُand I hear عَنهاabout it مَاwhat يَشوقُarouses longing ولاbut not أَرَىI see
إلىuntil أَنْthat رَأَتْsaw عَيْنيmy eye العَزازيَّal-ʿAzazi أحمداAhmad
I heard of it things that stirred longing, yet never saw it,
until my eye beheld Ahmad al-ʿAzazi.
فَراشَthen he feathered جَناحِيmy wing نَحْوَtoward مَلْكٍa king مُتَوَّجٍcrowned
تَخِرُّfall down لَهُbefore him الأَفلاكُthe celestial spheres ماwhenever لاحَhe appears سُجَّداprostrate
Then he feathered my wing toward a crowned king,
before whom the celestial spheres fall prostrate whenever he appears.
وأَنشدْتُهُand I recited to him فيin حَضْرةِthe presence of المُلْكِroyalty قَاعِداًseated
وَوَدَّand wished ابنُthe son of أَوْسٍAws ثَمَّthere لوthat قَامَhe might rise مُنشِداreciting poetry
I recited to him seated in the royal presence,
where Ibn Aws would have wished to rise and recite.
ولاand no بِيتَverse إلاexcept والشِّهابُwhile al-Shihab مُعزِّزoffering support
يَقولُhe says أَعِدْrepeat فَالعَوْدُfor repetition مَازالَhas always been أَحمداmore praiseworthy
Not a verse but al-Shihab lent his support,
saying, “Repeat it: repetition has always been more praiseworthy.”
وأَردَفَand he followed ليَfor me النُّعْمىthe favor بِنُعْمىَwith a favor مُشافهاًspeaking face to face
بهاof it الأفضَلَal-Afdal المَلْكَthe king الجَوادَthe generous مُمَجِّداextolling
He added favor to favor for me, speaking directly
to al-Afdal, the generous king, in praise of it.
فأَنشدْتُso I recited كالحالِas on the occasion التيthat قَدْalready تقدّمتْhad preceded
وَعَادَand returned شِهابُShihab الدِّينal-Din يُثنيhe praises كَماjust as بَداhe began
So I recited as I had done before,
and Shihab al-Din again praised, as at the beginning,
يَقولُhe says كَذاlike this فلينظمِso let him compose الشِّعْرَpoetry نَاظِمٌa poet
وَيَأْتيand he brings بهِwith it الأَملاكَthe kings مَثْنَىtwo at a time ومَوحِداand singly
saying, “Let a poet compose verse like this,
and bring it before kings, in pairs and singly.”
فَحَدَّثتُso I told نَفسيmyself بالغِنىof wealth غيرَnot كاذِبٍa liar
لأَنَّbecause بَنيthe sons of أَيُّوبَAyyub هُمْthey مَنْبعُthe wellspring of النَّداbounty
So I spoke to myself of riches, telling no lie,
for the sons of Ayyub are the wellspring of bounty.
وَلَمْand did not تَرَsee عَينيmy eye شاعِراًa poet وَدَّloved شاعِراًa poet
لِذاfor this reason وَلِذاand for this reason ماnot شادَextolled هذاthis الفَتَىyoung man سُدَىin vain
Never had my eye seen a poet love a poet;
for this reason and that, this youth's praise was not in vain.
فَعاشَso may he live شِهابُShihab الدِّينِal-Din يُفدَىis ransomed بحُبِّهمْthrough their love
وَبينَهُمُand among them والعَبْدُand this servant مِنamong جَمْلَةِthe number of الفِداthe ransom
So may Shihab al-Din live, ransomed through their love,
and in their midst; this servant is part of the ransom.
