سَأَلتُهُمُI asked them وقَدْwhile already حَثُّواthey urged onward المَطاياthe mounts
قِفُواstop شيئاًa little while فَسارواbut they went on حَيثُwherever شَاؤُاthey wished
I asked them, as they urged their mounts onward:
“Stop a while!” But they went wherever they wished.
وماand not عَطَفُواthey bent عَليَّtoward me وَهُمْthough they were غُصُونٌboughs
ولاnor التفتُواthey turned إليَّtoward me وَهُمْthough they were ظِباءُgazelles
And they did not bend toward me, though they were boughs,
nor turn toward me, though they were gazelles.
