May I forget you—if ever I forget you! Never
May I forget you if I ever forget you—and never
have lovers sworn an oath the like of mine.
have lovers sworn an oath like mine.

The breeze grew tender when I lamented, while
The breeze grew tender at my lament, and all night
the flickering lightning spent the night burning for me.
the flickering lightning burned for me.

لِلمِسْكِ مِن نَفَحاتهِ استِنْشاقُ
You perfumed the world with fragrant praise;
You perfumed the world with fragrant praise,
even musk breathes in its wafted scents.
whose wafts musk itself inhales.

وَعَنِ الصَّحَائفِ يُسْأَلُ الَورَّاقُ
You filled the chronicles of time with praises,
And you filled the pages of time with praiseworthy deeds,
and of those pages the copyist—al-Warrāq—is asked.
and about those pages the paper-seller, al-Warraq, is asked.
