Do people know that, during my fast, I have

Fallen passionately in love with a fair one like the moon?

Dark-eyed, she looks at her face in the mirror.

O you, this kind is not of humankind!

And sometimes she is fried by me, though her place

Is closer to my heart than my hearing or my sight.

    فَقلْتُ لَيْسَ يُصَانُ الحُسْنُ بالأُزُرِ

    And a guardian kept her splendor safe within a wrap;

So I said, "Beauty is not protected by wraps."

By your life, she spent the night in my breast and did not leave,

From supper until predawn, subject to my command.

I complain to her of my heart's fire, while she complains

Of fire many times greater, and we both speak the truth.

And I make free with her sanctuary, without committing

A sin against God, in coming or going.

Until, when the caller renewed his summons, I rose, while

We feared the tattling of the fragrant perfume upon her.

So may no rain visit her dwelling and abode in the morning—

No, rather I say: may a downpour visit her in the morning!

And may God not rebuke whoever brings her visit

Nearer to me, for there is no sin or danger in it.
