وَقَائلٍand someone saying عَهْدُهُhis acquaintance بِالنَّاسِwith people مُذْsince زَمَنٍa long time
وقَدْand indeed رَآنيhe saw me غرِيبَa stranger الدَّارِthe abode فيin بَلَديmy homeland
And one whose knowledge of people dated from long ago said,
having seen me a stranger in my own homeland:
مَاhave … not? فَطّروكَthey fed you to break your fast بِهذاduring this الصًوْمِfast قُلْتُI said لهُto him
مَاnot فَطَّرونيthey fed me to break my fast وَلكِنْand yet فَطَّرُواthey tore apart كَبِدِيmy liver
“Have they not given you food to break this fast?” I told him,
“They have not broken my fast, but they have torn my liver apart.”
