تَقولُshe says وَعِيدُwhile the feast النَّحْرِof sacrifice أَقبلَhas arrived والوَرَىand humankind
ضَحاياهُمُtheir sacrificial animals جَاءَتْhave come مَنازِلَهُمْto their homes تَتْرَىin succession
She says—as the Feast of Sacrifice has come, and people's
sacrificial animals arrive at their homes in succession,
وَمطبخُناand our kitchen قَدindeed شَابَhas grown gray مِنfrom طُولِthe length of عُطْلَةٍdisuse
بِهاduring it ماnot رَفَعْناwe have raised فَوقَabove كانُونهِits hearth قِدْراa cooking pot
and our kitchen has grown gray from long disuse,
during which we have not raised a pot above its hearth,
وَلَمْand did not تَرَshe see سِكِْيناًa knife تُحَدُّbeing sharpened ولاnor رَأَتْshe saw

and she has seen no knife being sharpened, nor seen
me buying charcoal, once the first thing bought,
وَلاnor وَجَدَتْshe detected رِيحَthe scent of الأَبازِيِرِspices لاno وَلاnor

nor caught the scent of spices—no, nor
has her eye seen salt itself or even a trace—
أَراكَI see you مُعِيرِيlending me سَكْتَةًa spell of silence عنabout ضَحِيَّةٍa sacrificial animal
بِهاthrough it سُنَّةُthe tradition of المُختارِthe Chosen One مَاnot بَرِحَتْhas ceased تُجرىto be observed
“I see you offering me silence about a sacrifice
through which the Chosen One's tradition has never ceased to be observed.”
فقلتُso I said لهاto her هذاthis مَعَwith اليُسْرِprosperity فاعْذِريso excuse me
وَحَقُّكِand your duty فىin الإعْسَارِfinancial hardship أنْto تَبسُطِيyou extend عُذْراan excuse
I told her, “That is for times of ease, so excuse me;
and in hardship it is your duty to make allowances.”
