And I used to withdraw from her, while in
her breast burned a fire from my withdrawal.

She melted for a drop of water that might
quench her affliction,
إلىuntil أَنْthat كَبِرْتُI grew old وَبَانَand departed الشَّبابُyouth
وَصَارَand came قُوايَmy strength إلىto التَّخليَهabandonment
until I grew old and youth departed,
and my strength deserted me.
وَأَصْبحَand became رُمحِيَmy lance حَبْلاًa rope بهِwith it

And my lance became a rope, with which
I went from thrusting to dangling.
وَوَلَّيْتُand I turned ظَهرِيmy back لهاto her فيin الفِراشِthe bed
فَصَاحَتْso she cried out مِنfrom النَّارِthe fire يَاO وَيْليَهwoe is me
And I turned my back to her in bed,
so she cried out from the fire: 'Oh, woe is me!
تَكفَّرْتَyou acted as an unbeliever بِالعَزْلِby withdrawal فىماin what مَضَىpassed

You acted as an unbeliever by withdrawing before,
and here I disbelieve because you turn away.'
