بَاكَرْتَنيyou came to me early بِخَمِيلَةٍwith a leafy grove مَطْوِيَّةٍfolded
يَسْرِيwafts لهاbelonging to it أَرَجٌfragrance بِكُلّwith every نَسِيمِbreeze
You came to me at dawn with a folded grove,
its fragrance wafting on every breeze.
فَشكَرْتُso I praised مِنfrom أُنفاسِهاits breaths أَدَبِيَّةًa literary piece
ذَهَبِيَّةًgolden فيin وَشَيْهاits embroidery المَرْthe patterned (word begins) قُومِ(completes “patterned”)
So I praised a literary piece breathed forth by it,
golden in its patterned embroidery.
وَوَرَدْتُand I came to بَحراًa sea; a poetic metre كامِلاًperfect; in the Kāmil metre منfrom كامِلٍa perfect man
تَرَكَleft الخَلِيلَal-Khalil يُجنُّharboring; concealing قَلْبَthe heart of كَلِيمِa wounded person
And I reached a perfect sea of Kāmil verse from a perfect man,
which left al-Khalil harboring a wounded heart.
