وَزائِرَةٍand a female visitor وَلَيسَand there is no بِهاin her احتِشامٌmodesty
تَزورُshe visits ضُحىًin midmorning وَتَطرُقُand she comes by night فيin الظَّلامِthe darkness
And a visitor who knows no modesty,
She visits in midmorning and comes calling in the dark.
بِهاin her عَهْدٌa pledge وَليسَand there is no بِهاin her عَقَافٌaversion
عَنِfrom الشَّيْخِthe old man الكَبيرِelderly وَلاnor الغُلامِthe boy
She keeps her pledge and feels no aversion
To the elderly man or the boy.
إذاwhen طَرَقَتْshe calls at night أَعَاذَmay grant protection اللَّهُGod منهاfrom her
سَلَوْتُI forget عَنِabout الكَرائمِnoble women والكِرامِand noble men
When she calls—may God grant protection from her—
I forget noble women and noble men.
لهاhers فيin ظاهِريmy outer body بَرْدٌa chill وحَرٌّand heat
بِقلبيin my heart والفُتُورُand languor ففيso in عِظاميmy bones
She brings a chill to my skin, and heat
To my heart; and languor lies within my bones.
تُلَهوِجُhalf-cooks نَارُهاher fire لحمِيmy flesh طَعاماًas food
وَتَشْرَبُand she drinks مِنfrom دَميmy blood صِرْفَunmixed المُدامِwine
Her fire half-cooks my flesh for food,
And from my blood she drinks unmixed wine.
وأَصواتُand the sounds الغِناءِof singing لهاfor her أَنينيmy groaning
فَماso not تَنفَكُّshe breaks away مِنfrom هذاthis المَقامِstation
And my groans are the sounds of song to her,
So she never departs from this station.
تَجافَتْنيshe shunned me علَىdespite شَيبيmy grey hair وَضَعفيand my frailty
وَقَدand indeed أَعْيَيْتُI have wearied رَبَّاتِthe ladies of الخِيامِthe tents
She has shunned me despite my grey hair and frailty,
Though I have wearied the ladies of the tents.
إذاwhen ماever فارقَتْنيshe parts from me غَسَّلَتْنيshe washes me
لأَنيbecause I قَدindeed وَصَلْتُhave reached إلىto حِمَاميmy death
Whenever she parts from me, she washes me,
For I have come to my appointed end.
