إذاwhen جُدْتَyou give generously فيهاin it قالتِsaid السُّحْبُthe clouds غَيْرَةًout of envy
تَأَنَّslow down فَإنَّfor indeed السَّيْلَthe torrent قَدْalready بَلَغَhas reached الزُّبَىthe high ground
When you give generously there, the clouds say in envy:
If you are steadfast therein, the clouds will say out of jealousy:
Slow down, for the torrent has already reached the high ground!
"Be gentle, for the torrent has reached the thickets."
ومَنْand one whom قَصَّرَتْfell short عَنهُof him البِحَارُthe seas تَأخّرَتْlagged behind

And behind him whom the seas cannot match lag
And he whom the seas fell short of attaining turned back,
the footsteps of rain, whether he wills it or not.
while the steps of the rain turned away from him, whether he wished it or not.
دَعُواleave الفَجْرَthe dawn فيin دُنياكُمُyour world لِسَميّهِto its namesake
فَمنْذُfor since ثَوىit dwelt فيin ظِلّهِhis shade مَاnot تَغَرَّبَاit set
Leave dawn in your world to its namesake;
Leave the dawn in your world for its sun,
for since it dwelt in his shade, it has never set.
for since it settled in its shade they have not been estranged.
وإلاَّand if not فَرُومُواthen seek شَأْوَهُhis reach إنْif قَدرْتُمُyou can
وَمَنْand who ذاthis one الذِىwho يَبغيseeks علىabove الشُهْبِthe bright stars مَنْصِبَاa station
Otherwise, strive to equal him, if you can;
Else try its summit if you can,
and who would seek a station above the bright stars?
and who is it that desires a position among the stars?
وَمَاand not حَجَبَserved as chamberlain to الأمْلاكَthe kings تَاللّهِby God مِثلُهُhis like
فَلاso may he not زَالَcease to be عَنfrom عَيْنِthe eye الخُطُوبcalamities محجَّبَاveiled
And by God, none like him has served as chamberlain to kings;
And the veils have not concealed the kingdoms of God like it,
so may he ever remain veiled from the eye of calamity.
so it still remains veiled from the eyes of calamities.
