إذاwhen أَناI يَممَّتُI headed toward الوَزِيرَthe minister بِمدْحَةٍwith a poem of praise
تَيقَّنْتُI was certain عُقْباهاits outcome الجَوائِزَthe rewards والرِّفْداand the gifts
When I approach the minister with a poem of praise,
I am certain it will bring rewards and gifts.
وَخِفْتُand I feared إذاwhen أَنشدْتُهُI recited to him حِذْقَskillfulness نَقْدهِhis criticism
فَأَرجُوso I hope لَهُfor it نَقْداًcash وَأَخْشَىand I fear لهُfor it نَقْداcriticism
Yet when I recite it to him, I fear his skill in criticism:
So I hope for cash for my verse, yet fear criticism of it.
