وَماand not مِنَّةُfavor الخَبَّازِthe baker عِندِىto me قَلِيلَةٌsmall
وَما مِنَّةُ الخَبَّازِ عِندِى قَلِيلَةٌ
لِقَرْضيَbecause of my borrowing منهُfrom him وَهْوَwhile he فيin عُسرتىmy hardship يٌغضيlooks the other way
لِقَرْضيَ منهُ وَهْوَ في عُسرتى يٌغضي
And the baker’s favor is no small thing to me.
The baker's favor to me is not small
For I borrow from him, and in my hardship he looks the other way.
For lending to me in my hardship readily
وَقَدْand indeed كُنتُI was مِثلَlike اللَّيثِthe lion آكِلْeating فَرِيستيmy prey
وَقَدْ كُنتُ مِثلَ اللَّيثِ آكِلْ فَرِيستي
وَقَدand indeed صِرْتُI have become مِثلَlike الفارِthe mouse آكِلُeating بالقَرْضِby gnawing / on credit (a pun)
وَقَد صِرْتُ مِثلَ الفارِ آكِلُ بالقَرْضِ
And once I was like a lion, eating my prey.
Once I was like a lion eating its prey
And now I have become like a mouse, eating by gnawing—on credit.
Now I am like a rat eating on credit
