وَهَاتِفَةٍand a calling bird نَبَّهتُهاI roused her بَعْدَafter مَاthat وَنَتْshe grew weary
مِنfrom النوحِlamentation واكتنَّتْand she sheltered in أَراكَarak trees الحِمىthe sanctuary وَكْراa nest
And I roused a calling bird after she had grown weary
And a caller I alerted after she despaired
of lamenting and had taken the sanctuary’s arak trees as her nest.
From anguish, and you hid from the fever, an enclosure
بَكَتْshe wept لَوْif only بَكتْshe had wept مِثليlike me بِدَمْعَةِwith a tear عَاشِقٍof a lover
وَهَيْهاتَbut far from it! فَيْضُthe outpouring الدَّمْعِof tears مَرْتَبةٌa rank أُخرَىanother
She wept—if only she had wept like me, with a lover’s tear!
She wept - if only she wept like me with a lover's tear
But far from it! A flood of tears is of another order.
Yet far away is the outpouring of tears, another station
وَقَدand indeed ضَمَّناclasped us together إذْat ذَاكَthat time ضِيقُthe tightness عِنَاقِناof our embrace
وَكَمْand how often ضَمَّclasped غُصْنٌa bough ذَابِلٌwithered غُصُناًa bough نَضْراverdant
And the tightness of our embrace had clasped us together then,
And we embraced then, so tight was our embrace
And how often a withered bough has clasped a verdant bough!
As many a withered branch embraces one still green
يَظنونَthey think أَنَّthat الخِدْرthe curtain يَحْجُبُconceals وَجْهَهَاher face
وَضَوْءُand the radiance مُحَيَّاهَاof her face الذيthat which يَحجُبُconceals الخِدْراthe curtain
They think the curtain conceals her face,
They think the veil conceals her face
Yet it is her face’s radiance that conceals the curtain.
Yet the glow of her cheek outshines any veil
