وَبَاخِلٍand a miser أَطْعَمنيfed me بُشرَهُhis cheerful countenance
وَبَاخِلٍ أَطْعَمني بُشرَهُ
وَغَرَّنيand beguiled me بِالبارِقِwith the lightning الخُلَّبِrainless and deceptive
وَغَرَّني بِالبارِقِ الخُلَّبِ
And a miser fed me his smiles,
A miser fed me his crumbs
and beguiled me with rainless lightning.
And tempted me with his flashy blade
لَوْif قُلْتُI said ياO أَبْخَلُmore miserly مِنthan مادِرٍMādir
لَوْ قُلْتُ يا أَبْخَلُ مِن مادِرٍ
لَقَالَthen he would say ياO أَطْمَعُgreedier مِنthan أَشعبِAshʿab
لَقَالَ يا أَطْمَعُ مِن أَشعبِ
Were I to say, “O you more miserly than Mādir!”
Had I said: "O more miserly than a hyena"
he would say, “O you greedier than Ashʿab!”
He'd say: "O greedier than a raven"
