    And a bondwoman of mine—whenever I wish to tread upon her,

    I kiss her, a firmly stipulated condition upon me.

    Nor has she shown me a clean mouth with spaced teeth,

    so that I might be excused, or a smooth, rosy cheek.

    وكُلُّ امْرِئٍ جَارٍ علَى مَا تَعَوَّدا

    But [unclear word]—what I have grown used to, something familiar to me;

    and everyone follows what he has grown accustomed to.

    So my face is upon a face of hers every night,

    and day, when [unclear word]; surely this will benefit me tomorrow.

    تَرَى كُلَّ يَوْمٍ ذاكَ مِنِّي مُجَدَّدا

    And my washing is not from treading her, but for her milk-skin [uncertain wording];

    you see that renewed by me every day.

    And whoever treads her never fails to have her bear a burden from him,

    although it is a bearing that leads to no birth.

    And here she is in the decade of eighty, yet she does not

    repel a toucher's hand, even with oaths.
