أَيَارُبَّAh, many a مَنone who ظَنَّنيthought me عَاجِزاًincapable
أَيَارُبَّ مَن ظَنَّني عَاجِزاً
عَنِof القَوْلِspeech والقَوْلُthough speech عِنْدِيwith me عَتِيدُready
عَنِ القَوْلِ والقَوْلُ عِنْدِي عَتِيدُ
Ah, many a one has thought me incapable
Oh Lord, whoever thinks I'm incapable
of speaking, though speech is ready at hand.
Of speaking out when I have words prepared
يَرَانَيsees me فيin الحِلْمِforbearance عَنtoward جَهْلهِhis folly
يَرَانَي في الحِلْمِ عَن جَهْلهِ
مَعَاويةَMu‘awiya وَهْوَwhile he فيهِin it يَزِيدُYazid (also: increases)
مَعَاويةَ وَهْوَ فيهِ يَزِيدُ
He sees me, in my forbearance toward his folly,
Would see me in my dream reproaching them for ignorance
as Mu‘awiya, while in that folly he is Yazid.
While in it they increase
