A resolve whose omen proved true in success,

among creatures with claws and creatures with wings:

    cheetahs and falcons, urged onward

by their goal in their morning departure and evening return.

The good fortune of King al-Salih sent them forth,

and they faced the prospects of prosperity.

A king who stained the earth crimson with blood,

whose hue [uncertain reading] you would take for the cheeks of beauties.

Every day of his hunting is a Feast of Sacrifice,

among wild beasts and foes like sacrificial victims.

and another day in what you call the business of combat.

Lean steeds: lightning blazes beneath their whip,

and the raging winds complain of exhaustion.

    لَمْ تَفُتْها مِثلَ القَضَاءِ المُتَاحِ

    So they fetter the gazelles in every wilderness;

none have escaped them, as none escapes allotted fate.

And beasts of prey whose very souls long,

in their vigor, to spring upon bodily forms.

The wild beasts never saw them without saying:

"Do not turn aside, for we have no escape."

From oryx, from wild ass and gazelle,

their wailing lingered long throughout the regions.

Spoils God has indeed made lawful; and God—

exalted is He—what a Provider and Opener!
