سَلامٌa greeting كَأَنفَاسِlike the breaths of الصَّباthe east wind مَسَتِtouched الرُّبىthe hills
بأَذيالِهاwith its trailing hems فاسْتيقَظتْso awoke أَعيُنُthe eyes of الزَّهْرِthe flowers
A greeting like breaths of the east wind that brushed the hills
A peace like the breezes of morning has touched the meadows
with its trailing hems, and the flowers' eyes awoke.
With its hems, so the eyes of the flowers have awakened
وَغَضَّand lowered its gaze لهاbefore it كالنَّرْجِسِlike the narcissus الفضيّsilvery نَاظِرٌan eye
يُكَفْكِفُholds back فيin أَجفانهِits eyelids أَدْمُعَthe tears of القَطْرِthe rain
And an eye like the silvery narcissus lowered its gaze before it,
And like silver narcissi their gazes have softened
holding back within its eyelids the tears of rain.
Blinking tears of dew from their lids as they glisten
وَقَبّلَand kissed خَدَّthe cheek of الوَرْدِthe rose وَهْوَwhile it بِكُمَّهِin its sleeve (calyx)
أَقَاحٍdaisies ومِنand from دَمْعِthe tears of الحَياthe rain بَاسِمُsmiling الثَّغْرِthe mouth
And the rose's cheek was kissed, while it was within its sleeve,
Kissing the cheek of the rose whose mouth in its bloom
by daisies, smiling-lipped with the tears of rain.
Is fresh, and is moist from the tear of vitality
وَقَدand indeed أَظهرَrevealed النَّمّامُthe tale-bearer (also a fragrant herb) سِرَّthe secret of هَواهُماtheir love
وليسand there is no معwith النّمّامthe tale-bearer سِتْرveil علىover سرِّa secret
And the tale-bearing herb revealed the secret of their love;
The whisperer has unveiled the secret of their love
with a tale-bearer, no secret remains veiled.
For the whisperer keeps no veil on a secret
ولؤلؤُand pearls of طلٍّdew لاحَgleamed فيin كلِّevery زهرةٍflower
ماnot لاحَgleamed عِقْدٌa necklace مِنof فَتاةٍa maiden علَىupon نَحْرِa throat
And pearls of dew gleamed in every flower,
Pearls of dew have appeared on every flower
as no necklace ever gleamed upon a maiden's throat.
Like a necklace adorning a maiden’s neck
وَقَامَand rose خَطِيبُthe preacher of الرَّعْدِthunder بَينَamid مَلابسٍgarments
منof السُّحْبِthe clouds سُودٍblack فانبرَىthen began دَمعُهاtheir tears يَجرِىto flow
And thunder's preacher rose amid garments
And the orator of thunder stood between robes
of black clouds; then their tears began to flow.
Of black clouds, so their tears began flowing
