    وَحُبّي لَهُ دَأْبي كَمَا دَأْبُهُ حُبّي

    Peace upon the chief who holds my heart;

    And loving him is my habit, as loving me is his.

    And my servant—he is Isa—harbors for his slave

    Abu al-Durr Yaqut a distraught, lovesick lover's passion.

    And he had asked him for a massage, seeking to deceive him,

    As the wolf slyly lures the gazelle away from the herd.

    And Isa deceived him; then a sign alarmed him.

    It showed him Moses's staff, so he lost hope of striking.

    And he went away; had he stayed where he was,

    He would surely have been carried on an unruly mount.

    And he came back terrified and said, “You sent me

    To a chief over buttocks who had developed an erection.”

    And he said, “My eye saw three legs,

    And one of them had an ill-omened heel.

    When my two palms pressed him, it moved,

    And rose upon a shank, as in your description of war.

    Its course was toward the ruby mine,

    And it gave no thought to whether the land was far or near.

    وَكَمْ عَانَتِ الأحْجَارُ بالحَلّ والثَّقْبِ

    And in stringing rubies it is well versed;

    And how much the stones have suffered from unstringing and drilling!

    So may no leg be guided that seeks, with its tread,

    The cities of Lot, which lie on the western side.”

    And ask Aden about a wedding procession whose fame flew abroad

    To dwellers and night travelers, over the years and among the riders.

    حَكَى وَحَكَتْ لَيْلاً تَرصَّعَ بالشُّهْبِ

    And a black man was led in procession by candlelight;

    He and the procession resembled a night studded with shooting stars.

    Night and day appeared in it to eyes

    That saw a marvel that would not let lash meet lash.

    لَهُ حَيَّةٌ رَقْطَاءُ تَنْهَشّ في القَلْبِ

    And ivory had descended into a piece of ebony;

    He has a speckled snake that bites into the heart.
