وَجَازانيand he repaid me علىfor شِعْرٍverse بِشِعْرٍwith verse
وَجَازاني على شِعْرٍ بِشِعْرٍ
وَعَوَّضَنيand he compensated me المُحَالَabsurdity عَنِin return for المُحالِabsurdity
وَعَوَّضَني المُحَالَ عَنِ المُحالِ
And he repaid me for verse with verse,
He repaid my poetry with poetry,
And gave me absurdity in return for absurdity.
And recompensed the impossible for the impossible,
وَلَستُand I am not أَلومُهُblaming him فِيماfor what أَتاهُhe did
وَلَستُ أَلومُهُ فِيما أَتاهُ
لِعَادَتهِbecause of his habit قَدِيماًof old بِالبِدالِof exchange
لِعَادَتهِ قَدِيماً بِالبِدالِ
And I do not blame him for what he did,
I do not blame him for what has come to him,
For he has long been accustomed to exchange.
For it was his ancient custom, to exchange.
