حَبْلُthe cord المَودَّةِof affection بَينَناbetween us لمnot يُنقضِbe undone
سَخِطَwas angered الحَسُودُthe envious one بِذاكَat that مِنَّاfrom us أَوor رَضِيwas pleased
The cord of affection between us has not been undone,
The cord of affection between us has not been cut
Whether the envious one resents this bond of ours or is pleased.
Whether the envious are pleased with us or angry
فَلَئِنْfor if تُعرِّضَis assailed أَوor تَعَرَّضَmeddles ناقِلٌa tale-bearer
فَالوَيْلُthen woe لِلمُتَعرَّضِto the one assailed المُتَعرِّضِthe meddler
For if a tale-bearer is assailed or himself meddles,
So if a slanderer slanders or is slandered
Then woe to the assailed meddler.
Woe to the slanderer who slanders!
ثَبَتَتْbecame firm لَدَيَّwith me كَماjust as لَدَيْكَwith you مَودَّةٌaffection

Affection stands firm in me, just as in you,
Affection is firmly established with me as it is with you
Offering you a proof that has not been refuted.
It leads you with an argument that cannot be refuted
وَبهاand with it اكتفَيْْتَyou were content فَقَدfor indeed دُعِيتَyou were called المُكتفيthe contented one (al-Muktafi)

With it you were content, for you were called al-Muktafi;
With it you were satisfied, so you were called the satisfied one
By it you gained light, and were called al-Mustadi.
With it you were content, so you were called the content one
قَسماًI swear شِهابَShihab (meteor) الدِّينِof the faith بِالبِشْرِby the cheerfulness الذِيthat

I swear, Shihab al-Din, by the cheerfulness that
I swear by the shooting star of religion and mankind
I see flashing from no face but yours,
That I do not see it flashing without your face

And by a palm that opened for nothing but generosity,
And my heart has never expanded with comfort
Ever, and was withheld from nothing but baseness:
Except with dew, and has never been embraced except by sorrow
إنّيindeed I علىupon وُدٍّaffection يَزِيدُكَadds to your صِحَّةًhealth

I hold an affection that increases your health;
I have an affection for you that increases your well-being
Without it comes the pain of sickening reproach.
Without it is the pain of blame that harms

Indeed, you sent a lush grove, enriching me
You sent me a lovely companion who delighted me
With the gilded and silvered among its blossoms.
With her ornamented and embroidered flowers

And you showed me the traces of your hand in generosity:
You showed me traces of your palm in the dew
O Fakhr, water them—the pages—and make them gardens.
O pride of one who relates it, compose and train it!

And the boy has obeyed you between
Two matters of glory and the sour-taster's palate [wording unclear].
The matters of glory and the wisdom of the wise
