مارَثَّhas not worn out لاno وأَبيكَby your father عَهْدُthe bond زِنادِيmy fire-flints
بَلْrather عَزَّwas hard to attain عَنْكَover you وعَنْand over أَبيكَyour father عَزائيmy solace
My fire-flints' bond has not worn out—no, by your father!
The covenant with your father is not forgotten,
Rather, solace over you and your father eludes me.
Rather, my determination to avenge you and your father remains resolute.
أُجْرِيI make flow الدُّموعَthe tears علىupon الدُّموعٍthe tears وذوand one possessed of الأسىgrief
مَنْone who طالبَcalled to account العَبَراتِthe tears بالإبطاءِfor their delay
I pour tears upon tears, and the grieving one
I shed tears upon tears, though the grieving one
is he who calls his tears to account for their delay.
Is not inclined to draw out sorrow with weeping.
إنْif كانَwas دَمْعُtears العَيْنِthe eye لَمْdid not يبلُغْreach دَمِيmy blood
فَوَراءَthen behind شُهْبِmeteors الدَمْعَthe tears جِمْرُembers دِماءِblood
If the tears of my eye have not reached my blood,
If my tears do not shed my blood,
then behind the meteors of tears lie embers of blood.
Then behind the shooting stars of tears is the burning ember of blood.
ماصانَdid not withhold أحمدُAhmad مالَهُhis wealth عَنْfrom سَائلٍa petitioner
فَيَصُونُso he should withhold مافيwhat is in جَفْنِهhis eyelid مِنof ماءِwater
Ahmad never withheld his wealth from a petitioner,
Ahmad did not hoard his wealth from a beggar,
so should he withhold the water in his eyelid?
So he could hoard the water in his eyelids.
ولَطَالَماand often جَلِّىdispelled سَوادَdarkness مَطالبِneeds
جُوْدُgenerosity ابنِson of مُوسىMusa ذِيpossessor of اليَدِthe hand البيضاءِwhite
And often the darkness of needs was dispelled
Often the generosity of the son of Musa with the white hand
by the generosity of Ibn Musa, he of the white hand.
Made clear the darkness of requests.
وَلكَمْand how often أَبىrefused فيin الجُودِgenerosity معنىًa notion قدhad شأَىoutstripped
مَعْناًMa'n بهِwith it وطَوىand folded away حَديثَthe tale of الطَّائيal-Ta'i
And how often, in generosity, he refused a notion, having outstripped
And how often he refused in generosity a purpose which had occurred
Ma'n with it and folded away the tale of al-Ta'i.
To him, and folded away the talk of the lost.
