لَمَّاwhen رَأَيْتُI saw البَدْرَthe full moon والشَّمْسَand the sun مَعاًtogether
لَمَّا رَأَيْتُ البَدْرَ والشَّمْسَ مَعاً
وَقَدand already انجَلَتْhad lifted دُونَهُماbefore them both الدَّياجِيthe dark nights
وَقَد انجَلَتْ دُونَهُما الدَّياجِي
When I saw the full moon and the sun together,
When I saw the full moon and sun together
And the darkness had lifted before them both,
And below them the darkness had scattered away
حَقَرْتُI scorned نَفْسِيmyself وَمَضْيتُand I went away هَارِباًfleeing
حَقَرْتُ نَفْسِي وَمَضْيتُ هَارِباً
وَقُلْتُand I said مَاذاwhat مَوْضِعُplace السِّراجِthe lamp
وَقُلْتُ مَاذا مَوْضِعُ السِّراجِ
I scorned myself and fled away,
I belittled myself and went away fleeing
And I said, "What place is there for the lamp?"
And said "What is the need for a lamp?"
