تَهجَّمstormed السَّيْلُthe torrent علىupon وِطَاقهِhis tent
The vizier Ahmad's forbearance has gone too far, or
The patience of Minister Ahmed was excessive, or
the torrent has stormed his tent.
The torrent rushed upon his riverbank.
وَلَيسَand it is not يَخفَىhidden السَّيْلُthe torrent أَنَّthat كفَّهُhis hand
قَادِرَةٌcapable ثَمَّthere علىof إغْراقهِdrowning it
And it is no secret to the torrent that his hand
Yet the torrent knows not that his palm
is capable of drowning it there.
Is able, then, to submerge it.
لكنَّهُbut it زَارَvisited حِمَاهُhis sanctuary طَارِقاًas a night visitor
وَعَادَةُand the custom السَّمْحِthe generous man قِرَيhospitality طُرَّاقهِhis night visitors
But it visited his sanctuary as a night guest,
But it visited his protector impetuously,
and the generous man's custom is to offer hospitality to his night guests.
And the habit of benevolence is to have an open door.
فَباتَso it spent the night فيin أَزوادهِhis provisions مُحكَّماًgiven full authority
وَزَادَand increased حتَّىuntil زادَincreased فيin اسْتِغْراقهِengulfing him
So it spent the night as master of his provisions,
So it lodged securely in his supplies,
and swelled until it engulfed him all the more.
And increased until it increased in absorption.
وَلَوْand had أَتاهُcome to him فيin النَّدِيgenerosity مُحارباًas an adversary
مَاnot قَدَرَcould الغَيْثُthe rain علىto لِحَاقهِcatching up with him
And had it come to him to do battle in generosity,
Had it come to him in the valley as an adversary,
the rain could not have caught up with him.
The rain would not have had the power to catch up with him.
أَقَدْhas ...? رأىseen الغَيثُthe rain أَبَرَّmore beneficent نائلاًin giving
منهُthan him وأَحْلَىand sweeter منهُthan him فيin مَذاقهِhis flavor
Has the rain ever seen one more beneficent in giving
Did the rain ever see a cloud more fruitful than him
than him, and sweeter than him to the taste?
Or sweeter than him in its taste?
وَفَارَقَand he parted with المجموعَwhat was amassed إلاَّexcept فَخْرَهُhis glory
حَاشَاهُfar be it from him أَنْto يَرْغَبَwish فيfor فِراقهِparting with it
And he parted with all he had amassed, save his glory—
It parted from the group except for its pride -
far be it from him to wish to part with it.
Far from it that it would desire to abandon it!
