    I see the port smiling, fragrant with the mention of you.

    An importer has procured pearls and musk from it.

    You raised the beacon of justice above its lighthouse,

    so the piercing stars sought refuge at its flanks.

    And every traveler across the two expanses made for it—

    camel-driver and sailor, walker and rider.

    You brought the forest lion and the lions to a watering place

    where the warrior came to incline toward peace.

    So no gazelle's flank muscles trembled there,

    nor did a lion's claws sink in there.

    When a speaker names you, water freezes

    from its impact on the heart, while rock melts.

    And that is only because he feared his Lord

    and revered Him; so everyone fears him and stands in awe.

    وَشَابَتْ بهِ فَوْداهُ واللَّيْلُ شَائِبُ

    He donned terror's garment as armor while the night was young;

    and his temple-locks grew gray through it, while the night was gray.

    وَكَيْفَ لهُ بِالأَمْنِ والدَّهْرُ طَالِبُ

    And he became Time's hunted quarry, afraid;

    and how could he be safe when Time is the pursuer?

    If you are a neighbor of Ibn Bakhil, seek refuge

    in a noble man whose sanctuary calamities have never assailed.

    And call out in Prince Muhammad's gathering:

    Listen: who will vie for the heights and strive to prevail?

    وَأَنَّى وَجَدَّاهُ لُؤَيٌ وَغالبُ

    And describe an Umayyad whose promise was never warped by delay;

    and how could it be, when his forefathers are Lu'ayy and Ghalib?

    وبالفَرْع تَسْتَفْرِى الأُصُولُ الأَطَايِبُ

    And his proud spirit bore witness to his forefathers;

    and through the branch you trace the finest roots.

    فَهَا عَبْدُ شَمْسٍ مِنهمُ اسْمٌ مُنَاسِبُ

    And by his glory he surpassed even his forebears;

    so behold 'Abd Shams among them—a fitting name.

    And how many difficulties he has cleared—and why should they not

    be dispelled by the sun's light, when they are deep darkness?

    وَهَا نَحنُ أَلقَتْنا إليهِ السَّبَاسِبُ

    And the market of 'Ukaz is his abode, and he is its Quss;

    and here we are—the vast plains have cast us to him.

    فَقَدْ نَاسَبَتْ تِلكَ المَُالي المَناسِبُ

    And the refinements of study, then of character—he possessed both;

    so those lofty merits have indeed matched his ancestry.

    And how many maxims and marvels you bring,

    with which minds feel at home, though they are strange!

    As though we see Alexander now residing

    in his city, or Aristotle acting as deputy.
