شَكَارَShakar قَدindeed آلَيْتَyou have sworn عَيْنيmy eye فِداهُa ransom for him
فَقَلْبُfor the heart المُتيّمِthe lovesick lover قَلْبٌa heart شَفِيقُcompassionate
Shakar, you have sworn—may my eye be his ransom.
You have saddened my eyes, may I sacrifice myself for him,
For the lovesick lover's heart is a compassionate heart.
For the heart of the bereaved is a kind heart.
وَقالَand he said أَمِنْتُI am safe بِشِعْريتيwith my gauze veil
وَبينيand between me وَبينَكُمُand between you (plural) سِتْرٌa screen رَقِيقُthin
And he said, “I am safe behind my gauze veil,
And I said “I have trusted in my poetry”,
and between me and you is a thin screen.”
While between you and me there is a thin veil.
وَمَاand not سَرْدُchain mail داودَDavid مِنىfrom me يَقيِكَprotects you
وَأَنتَwhile you بِأَسهُمِby the arrows of لَحظيmy glance رَشِيقُpierced by arrows
Yet David's chain mail cannot shield you from me,
The chanting of David does not protect me from you,
while you are pierced by the arrows of my glance.
While you are skillful in aiming at my glances.
