وأَهْيفَand a slender-waisted one مِثلِlike الرُّمحِthe spear عَانقْتُI embraced قَدَّهُhis form
وأَهْيفَ مِثلِ الرُّمحِ عَانقْتُ قَدَّهُ
غَداةَon the morning of وَدَاعٍfarewell والمُراقِبُand the watcher يَنظُرُlooks on
غَداةَ وَدَاعٍ والمُراقِبُ يَنظُرُ
And a slender one, like a spear—I embraced his form
And graceful as a spear I embraced his neck
On the morning of farewell, while the watcher looked on.
On the morn of farewell while the watcher looked on
وَلَمْand did not أَخْشَI fear طَعْناًa thrust لِلوُشَاةِfrom the slanderers بَقولهُمْwith their words
وَلَمْ أَخْشَ طَعْناً لِلوُشَاةِ بَقولهُمْ
وَفيand in رَاحتيmy palm مِنfrom قَدّهِhis form اللَّدْنِsupple أَسْمَرُa brown lance
وَفي رَاحتي مِن قَدّهِ اللَّدْنِ أَسْمَرُ
And I feared no thrust from the slanderers’ words,
And I feared not the slanderers' stab with their saying
While in my palm was a brown lance—his supple form.
Thoughbrandished in my right hand from his neck was a blade dark and keen
