سالا عَنِ الجودِ وَالمَعروفِ أَينَ هُما
فَقُلتُso I said إِنَّهُماindeed, they both ماتاboth died مَعَwith الحَكَمِal-Hakam
فَقُلتُ إِنَّهُما ماتا مَعَ الحَكَمِ
They both asked about generosity and kindness: “Where are they?”

So I said, “Indeed, they both died with al-Hakam.”
I said: they died with chivalry
ماتاboth died مَعَwith الرَجُلِthe man الموفيfaithful بِذِمَّتِهِto his pledge
ماتا مَعَ الرَجُلِ الموفي بِذِمَّتِهِ
يَومَon the day of الحِفاظِdefending honor إِذاwhen لَمnot يوفَfidelity be shown بِالذِمَمِto the pledges
يَومَ الحِفاظِ إِذا لَم يوفَ بِالذِمَمِ
They died with the man faithful to his pledge,
They died with the man who kept his word
on the day of defending honor, when pledges were not kept.
