There appeared, the day we set out bound for her land,

a rightward-crossing creature; the company said, 'A rightward passer has passed.'

Some men among them took fright and hung back.

So I told them, 'My neighbor brings me good fortune.'

An eagle at the rear of the dwelling, after

a far-reaching resolve had taken its course, consoling the lover.

And my companions said, 'A hoopoe atop a moringa tree:

guidance and a clear sign of success shining forth.'

And they said, 'Blood! May covenants endure between us,

and may the sweetness of affection remain ours, unalloyed.'
