Indeed, I am a man who has always—and that is from
I am a man who has always taught manners
God—taught men of refinement since long ago.
I stay settled in a house as long as it is welcoming

I stay in a dwelling as long as I am at peace in the
I do not covet my friend's seclusion
dwelling, even though I am far from home and yearning.
Nor do I indulge my soul if it wanders

I do not loathe a friend's companionship, nor
I seek sustenance as a generous man would
do I send my soul after anything once it is gone.
Making requests gently and pleasantly

I seek what a noble man seeks of
I milk only the pure camels
livelihood by my own efforts, and am measured in my pursuit.
Not overworking the others’ udders

And I milk the richly yielding, choice she-camel, and do not
I have seen that if you encourage a noble youth
strain another's teats by milking.
In a craft, he soon obliges
إِنّيindeed I رَأَيتُI have seen الفَتىthe young man الكَريمَthe noble إِذاwhen

Indeed, I have seen that a noble young man, when
A slave does not seek high status
you encourage him to do a kindness, is eager.
Nor gives you anything unless intimidated

And the slave seeks no eminence, nor
Like a branded donkey, he only walks properly when beaten
gives you anything unless he is afraid,
The timid resident may be granted his living

like the wretched, sore-backed donkey, which does not
Without packing his bags or moving his tent
walk well unless it is beaten.

The man at ease who stays put may receive sustenance, though he has not
Good faith and pedigree when I reflected
strapped a riding saddle or pack-saddle onto pale camels.
He who travels around is deprived of sustenance

And I found no support for mankind except
And whoever remains an émigré far from home
religion and ancestral honor, when I reflected.

And sustenance is denied to the man with a mount and

No wailing bird could sway me

And if, in some land, the dwelling casts me off and I hasten
Nor a weeper when it wailed
to others than its inhabitants who are close kin,

no passing omen-bird among the birds can turn
me back, nor a cawing crow when it caws.
