رَأَيتُI saw الجَحشَthe young ass جَحشَthe young ass of بَنيthe sons of كُلَيبٍKulayb
تَيَمَّمَmade for حَولَthe vicinity of دِجلَةَthe Tigris ثُمَّthen هاباtook fright
I saw the young ass, the young ass of Banu Kulayb,
make for the Tigris’s banks, then take fright.
فَأَولىso more fitting أَنthat يَظَلَّshould remain العَبدُthe slave يَطفوfloating
بِحَيثُwhere يُنازِعُvies with الماءُthe water السَحاباthe clouds
So better that the slave should remain afloat
where the water vies with the clouds.
أَتاكَhas come to you البَحرُthe sea يَضرِبُbeats against جانِبَيهِits two sides
أَغَرَّgleaming white تَرىyou see لِجِريَتِهِin its current حَباباfoam
The sea has come to you, beating against its shores,
gleaming white; you see foam in its current.
نُمَيرٌNumayr جَمرَةُthe burning ember of العَرَبِthe Arabs الَّتيwhich لَمnot
Numayr is the Arabs’ ember, which has never
ceased to blaze fiercely in war.
وَإِنّيand indeed I إِذwhen أَسُبُّI revile بِهاin its name كُلَيباًKulayb
فَتَحتُI have opened عَلَيهِمُupon them لِلخَسفِto humiliation باباa gate
And I, when I revile Kulayb in its name,
have opened upon them a gate to humiliation.
وَلَولاand were it not أَنthat يُقالَit be said هَجاhe lampooned نُمَيراًNumayr
وَلَمand did not نَسمَعwe hear لِشاعِرِهاfrom its poet جَواباa reply
And were it not that someone might say, ‘He lampooned Numayr,
and we heard no reply from its poet,’
رَغِبناwe turned away عَنfrom هِجاءِlampooning بَنيthe sons of كُلَيبٍKulayb
وَكَيفَand how يُشاتِمُtrade insults with الناسُpeople الكِلاباthe dogs
we would have disdained to lampoon Banu Kulayb.
And how can people trade insults with dogs?
وَدارِيٍّand many a townsman سَلَختُI stripped الجِلدَthe skin عَنهُoff him
كَماjust as سَلَخَstripped off القِرارِيُّthe villager الإِهاباthe hide
And many a townsman have I stripped of his skin,
as a villager strips off a hide.
