إِنّيindeed I وَإِنand even if كانَwere اِبنُthe son of عَمّيmy paternal uncle كاشِحاًharboring malice
لَمُزاحِمٌsurely a defender مِنfrom خَلفِهِbehind him وَوَرائِهِand at his back
I, though my cousin bears me malice,
Surely stand in his defense, behind him and at his back.
وَمُفيدُهُand granting him نَصريmy support وَإِنand even if كانَwere اِمرَأًa man
مُتَزَحزِحاًkeeping aloof فيin أَرضِهِhis earth وَسَمائِهِand his sky
And grant him my support, even if he is a man
Who keeps aloof in his earth and sky.
وَأَكونُand I am والِيَthe keeper of سِرِّهِhis secret فَأَصونُهُso I safeguard it
حَتّىuntil يَحينَcomes due عَلَيَّupon me وَقتُthe time of أَدائِهِits delivery
And I am the keeper of his secret, safeguarding it,
Until the time comes for me to deliver it.
وَإِذاand when دَعاhe calls بِاِسميby my name لِيَركَبَso he may ride مَركَباًa mount
صَعباًunruly قَعَدتُI sit لَهُfor him عَلىupon سيسائِهِits backbone
And when he calls my name to ride a mount—
An unruly one—I take my seat upon its backbone for him.
وَإِذاand when اِستَجاشَhe calls for reinforcements رَفَدتُهُI aid him وَنَصَرتُهُand I support him
وَإِذاand when تَصَعلَكَhe becomes destitute كُنتُI am مِنamong قُرَنائِهِhis companions
And when he calls for reinforcements, I aid and support him.
And when he becomes destitute, I am among his companions.
وَإِذاand when الحَوادِثُcalamities أَجحَفَتwreak havoc بِسَوامِهِon his grazing herd
قُرِنَتis joined صَحيحَتُناour healthy herd إِلىto جَربائِهِhis mangy herd
And when calamities ravage his grazing herd,
Our healthy herd is joined to his mangy one.
وَإِذاand when أَتىhe comes مِنfrom وَجهِهِhis direction لِطَريقِهِto his road
لَمnot أَطَّلِعI peer مِمّاfrom what is وَراءَbehind خِبائِهِhis tent
And when he makes his way along his road,
I do not peer from behind his tent.
وَإِذاand when رَأَيتُI see عَلَيهِupon him ثَوباًa robe ناعِماًsoft
لَمnot يُلفِنيhe finds me مُتَمَنِّياًlonging لِرِدائِهِfor his cloak
And when I see a soft robe upon him,
He does not find me coveting his cloak.
وَإِذاand when اِرتَدىhe puts on ثَوباًa robe جَميلاًbeautiful لَمnot أَقُلI say
ياoh لَيتَif only أَنَّthat عَلَيَّupon me حُسنَthe beauty of رِدائِهِhis cloak
And when he wears a beautiful robe, I do not say,
"Oh, if only I wore the beauty of his cloak!"
وَمَتىand whenever أَجِئهُI come to him فيin الشَدائِدِhardships مُرمِلاًout of provisions
أُلقيI pour الَّذيwhat فيin مُزوَديmy provision-bag لِوِعائِهِinto his vessel
And whenever I come to him in hard times, with his provisions gone,
I pour what is in my provision-bag into his vessel.
وَإِذاand when جَنىhe incurs غُرماًa financial penalty سَعَيتُI strive لِنَصرِهِto aid him
حَتّىuntil أُهينَI hold cheap كَرائِميmy choicest possessions لِفِدائِهِto ransom him
And when he incurs a penalty, I strive to aid him,
Till I hold my choicest possessions cheap to ransom him.
