تَقولُshe says اِبنَتيmy daughter لَمّاwhen رَأَتshe saw بُعدَthe remoteness of مائِناour water
وَإِطلابَهُand the difficulty of obtaining it هَلis there? بِالسُبَيلَةِat al-Subaylah مَشرَبُa drinking place
My daughter said, when she saw how far away our water was
My daughter asked, when she saw our water was far
and how hard it was to obtain: Is there a drinking place at al-Subaylah?
And its absence, “Can we drink from the roadside pool?”
فَقُلتُso I said لَهاto her إِنَّindeed القَوافِيَthe rhymes قَطَّعَتhave severed
بَقِيَّةَthe remainder of خُلّاتٍfriendships بِهاthrough them نَتَقَرَّبُwe draw near
So I said to her: The rhymes have indeed severed
I said, “The rhymes have interrupted
the last bonds of friendship through which we draw near.
What remains of our sweet bonding time.”
رَأَيتُI saw بَنيthe sons of حِمّانَHimman أَسقَواthey gave water to بَناتِهِمtheir daughters
وَماand not لَكِfor you فيamong حِمّانَHimman أُمٌّa mother وَلاnor أَبُa father
I saw Banu Himman give their daughters water,
I saw the tribe of Himmân give their daughters water
and among Himman you have neither mother nor father.
Yet you have no mother or father among Himmân’s tribe.
