A sorrow over Asma has risen in you, robbing you of sleep.

And from where does her phantom come to visit by night?

While her saddles lie in al-Jaww, near Hawarah,

where the lank wolf encounters the wild beasts.

Then she settled at Nabiyy or Ramādān; before reaching her lie

mountain spurs and plains of bare, open desert.

And a supple yellow cord, braided from rawhide,

is wound about her two eyes, then twisted and loosened,

beside the forelegs of a Mahri she-camel from Shadan,

made to kneel briefly while the sparrows chirp.

Then he cooled both sides of her back and closed his eyes awhile.

And she circled him briefly while he kept his head bowed.
