O my people, what ails this night in Safar?

It grows longer, and never any shorter.

After its companion was torn away from me

on the day of al-Hadala, by the cords of fate.

As though my heart, the day it parted from them, was split

in two, between a man of Najd and one descending.

They are the beloved; today I weep after them.

I once yearned after neighbors far away.

So I said, with the rugged lava-field between me and them,

and the valley of Lajjan, when remembrance returned to me:

May the Merciful bless 'Azza and her daughter,

Layla, and bless her other female neighbors.

They are freeborn ladies, not mistresses of asses—

black about the eye-sockets, who recite no surahs.

They hide thick, luxuriant locks within their coverings,

like Duma's towering palms between channels and walls.

You find their watchmen on every lookout,

shooting to protect the drooping, down-bent branches.

They capture my heart with dyed fingertips,

with their eyes, and what they conceal beneath the veils,

over the breastbones of gazelles taken unawares,

startled, then turning with their necks and cheek-tufts.

May my companions' eyes not go blind, as I say to them

at solitary al-Anbat, when my sight outstripped theirs:

Do you make out, high on 'Asim, women in their howdahs,

who left Fahlayn to one side and faced Dhu Baqar?

It made them out with a clarity unmatched

by my comrades, though their eyes have no defect.

They appear at times; at others they are hidden

from me by hollows between al-Jarr and al-Hafar.

Nabataeans urge them onward, their moustaches tawny,

hired, ruddy men, each one from Hauran.

They glide like ships upon trained Bactrian camels,

the Bactrians shaggy about their rumps and necks.

The murmur of the drivers along their flanks seems

the doves' lament, singing in a milkweed thicket.

I followed their tracks with an eye accustomed

to outstripping other eyes when strained to look.

    And a mature she-camel, massive as a smith's anvil,

whose elbow never chafed her flank through an inward bend.

As though she were a roaming wild bull, clear about the eyes,

of Jibran's wild herds, between the sandy hollow and the ridges.

He spent the night beside a mound, beneath a passing raincloud,

pressing into the thorn trees with an unbroken horn.

He shifts his breast away from a root that hurts him,

drawing away like a breeding camel with a galled chest.

Whenever he approaches one side of them, he is driven away

by the wind's buffeting beneath the steady, pouring rain.

Until, when the obscurity around him cleared,

and night withdrew from that hungry, lean creature,

he set out like a seeker of vengeance, undeterred

by a caller's cry, turning aside for no news.

Al-Ghawth's dogs came upon him at dawn, urged on

by men seeking a clear view, seeing the beast as they see its track.

His ear caught a faint sound from the foremost of them,

and the white beast darted, terrified, from the cover.

He crossed to the farther slope, already overtaken

by lop-eared hounds, revealed by the pale light before dawn.

Then he wheeled, a lord of his ground defending his own,

like a cloth merchant from Hauran fighting back.

Their swiftest lay stretched across the meadow,

like an old waterskin struck by a reckless player's spear.

    لَم تُدمَ فيهِ بِأَنيابٍ وَلا ظُفُرِ

    He drove them back limping, their shoulder-muscles bleeding;

no fang or claw had drawn blood from him.

Then he kept crossing the curved sands of Dihqan,

bounding, his cloven hooves yellow with flowers.

Is it that beast, or a dark wild ass bearing scabs

from bites—not from a scant few full-grown mares,

slender-bellied, whose coat of hardship was driven off

by a fine summer coat, soft of hair?

Repeated pregnancies had not worn down their natural build

after mating, nor had barrenness made them heavy.

As though they were short-tailed sandgrouse lingering on knolls

of Thukd, jostling in its muddy water.

Reddish asses of Samawa, they had been kept from water

    at Rijlat al-Tays, then al-Rawha', then al-Amar.

They had lived on moist pasture; its drinking places wearied of them,

and summer winds disappointed them in the pools.

He set off before sunset, driving them with blows,

as a brutal driver beats a fearful, wary man's young she-camels.

By night they emerge from a dust-cloud with a crest,

on a bare plain between level ground and rocky heights.

Until, when dawn shone, there lifted

from him the dark plume of a dense cloud with two fringes,

and they reached al-Rayyan's pools at dawn, then followed

their lips into the water, wading up to their navels.

Until, when they had quenched the first burning thirst, but had not

filled their stores for full drinking and departure,

while two men waited in a blind, their bows yellow,

beside their elbows, like two wolves in their dens.

They vied for the first shot, and it was won

by a practiced bowman, deadly at striking the spine.

When at last he filled both palms with the drawn bow, he was overtaken

by envious fortune, and the bowstring's strength failed him.

They darted off faster than birds racing for their lives,

plunging toward a lava-field from a lurking bird of prey.

Whenever they met a ridge before a cistern,

they veered round its farther side toward a frequented place.

They topped Firzat al-Ajam, fleeing in panic,

not knowing whence their first alarm had come.

By morning they stood among landmarks on a lookout height,

lean as the gaming arrows of a debt-laden gambler.

A jealous, hard-driving male bites at their rumps,

like a plank, his two flanks stripped of shaggy hair.

Their pale-marked male cuts his way, dust riding him,

tracking like a thirsty water-scout along the trail.
