By your life, had I awoken in Munqidh's abode,

Sa'd would not have been wronged, a neighbor to my tents.

    مَتى يعدُ فيها الذئبُ يعدُ عَلى شاتي

    But I have awoken in a land of strangers;

Whenever the wolf runs there, it attacks my ewe.

So, O Sa'd, do not endanger yourself; depart.

For you are among a people dead to their neighbor.

And take my small camel herds, for from those people

I shall surely depart; may my little daughters not lose me.

And journey toward Jurm, for Jurm are mighty,

And do not idle among them in the company of women.

If they do not rise to avenge me and fight in earnest

With their spear-thrusts and blows in every raid,

Then may their striver never return, nor their poverty be relieved,

And may the worst calamities never leave them in this world.
