And when he saw whiteness in the vessel,
When he saw the moon rise in the sky
he let out a growl, like one crying aloud.
A roar like thunder arose from him

أُريدُ العَلاءَ وَيَنوي السِمَن
We are two friends, but our purposes differ:
We are two friends of different type
I seek glory, and he intends to grow fat.
I aspire for glory, he for fatness

وَراقَ المُعَلّى بَياضُ اللَبَن
I seek the blood of the sons of Māzin,
I aspire for the blood of Bani Mazin
while the whiteness of milk pleased al-Muʿallā.
While the exalted one is pleased with milk's whiteness
