Whatever they desecrate in God's land, whatever crimes they commit,

we will not raise the white flag, O Rafah.

Even if they brought the slain back to us by a miracle,

and the martyrs excused death or pardoned it,

    وإنْ أقاموا ؛ فللذّبحِ الذي ذبحوا

    no, we will not forgive those who came with a massacre;

and if they remain, it is for the slaughter they inflicted.

And how can we forget the fragments of a flower burned,

and the honor of the one who bore her, when they shed blood?

And can we live beside those who set it ablaze with scorching heat—

an orange grove opening to the rising sun?

And who makes peace with those who left no window

for the star's pulse and the waves they wounded?

They are the ones who came from an oppressor's darkness,

and encamped upon my throat, and ran wild.

And I said: I can bear strangers, if gentle

are their footsteps within the house's space, or if they incline to peace.

    فكيف إنْ سُعِّروا يوماً وإنْ شَطَحوا ؟

    They will never do good—and that is when they fall back;

so what if one day they are inflamed and go to extremes?

And they coated the poison and reverted to their roots,

always, and they have fanned strife among others.

And how many a messenger spoke for an age of goodness, yet

    saw only backstabbing, ravaging all.

    وإنْ بقوا ؛ فهو قبرٌ عندنا مُنِحوا

    And they dug like those who departed in disappointment;

and if they remain, it is a grave they are granted among us.

We are no trampling ground for the horses of the covetous; have

they returned to them in victory? Have they rejoiced?

From Gaza of the valiant, the sand is an earthquake,

and in Jenin they saw what came to pass, and were disgraced.

    فليجرعوا الردَّ قَاصفاً أينما قُبِحوا

    They are the ones who began the raids and the rampage;

so let them swallow the shattering reply, wherever they are reviled.

We shall surely remain, like the name to which rose

our weddings; and the afflicted one is joyful.

No, they will not sleep; and if they sleep, it is in dread,

and behind every wall of theirs is a specter.

O curse of blind time, enough arrogance!

Whenever my tears rise, do they swim all the more?

Perhaps the orphans have multiplied, and laid bare

are these houses, naked; and they have rammed the horizon.

And perhaps they seized by force a handspan upon my body,

but they gained nothing but this shame.

So let the fascist world drink once more

my blood—the prophet—from the cup they made overflow.
