How can I say what I shall say,

when my heart is ravaged by love of him?

Mirrors carried me to the mirage,

and torrents hurled me into breathlessness.

And my path clouded over in the stumbling of my steps,

and the stranger's darkness upon it was mire.

And the clouds drifted, pale and distant,

and their faint glimmer was a fading away.

And on the bank of the windblown sands lies one slain,

whose ribs the drawn blade has not left.

And here or there a fire has vanished,

and decayed remains, scattered and sifted.

And the hearthstones are pensive widows,

and the echo across the expanse is wounds and a ghoul.

The nights sent their fury whirling southward,

and northward; the plains brought us no relief.

And we hid behind the camel litters until

a shower subsided and a coo fluttered.

Perhaps there was rejoicing in the outlying places:

a dancing sword, a neighing steed, and drums.

Or we passed a poet revealing himself,

and the drinking companions, despite their wounds, were stalwarts.

And near us, wild chamomile or wormwood,

and fragrance, or an emerging wreath.

    This earth's hands are two tracts of sand;

no clouds upon its face, nor rainfall.

And the stars sway within it in brokenness,

and withering is the flowers' robe.

Wandering, lost—and on my path there is nothing

but 'She departed'—and my heart is shackled.

The ruins stopped me when they came into view,

and, I believe, the remnants had spoken to me:

O wounded one, gone for an unsettling age,

and rising doubts are a grief that lingers.

So Suad folded away, went dark, and vanished,

and ailing love fell to pieces within her.

And she hid herself, for she was a mare in whom

    a honeyed quince had clamored.

So the sorrowing tribe wept for her and said:

At first come trembling and wasting away.

Where did you return? Have you ever burned

for Suad, while union with her was hoped for?

How can you go on and abandon the virgin paradise?

A gazelle—and it has no fields!

Yet when we saw you all tears,

we wept—for the killer is the one killed.

So weep for a love scattered like grass

whose necks burnished death has shorn.

And walk through the pathways' darkness, and remember:

the possessor of light is bearer and borne.

And he robed himself across the earth, lengthwise and breadthwise,

for the herald's shirt is breadth and length.

    واقْصد الكَشْفَ.. فالمدى مسدولُ

    And doze: these are abodes of whiteness;

and seek unveiling, for the expanse is draped.

And I awoke: the sky is lifted high,

and the earth, spread with radiance, is indwelling.

And we left her ruins and went on,

and the long journey is a weary saddle.

    And a camel-driver sang in sorrow's stillness,

and his wet eyelid watered the camel saddle.

Did we awaken from revelation's tremor when

riders and horses swept through us?

Or might a voice be ringing in my breast:

Halt him, for he is answerable.

The bells questioned me: do you have a path,

and a guide, an exit, and entry?

And when the lovers burst into tears of longing,

and, because absence was so immense, the Messenger came.

Before him, the hearts had gone blind—those

from which the clear way and reason had departed.

And a people's lives swelled through the unlawful,

and tribes and blades perished utterly.

Eyes stared upward, questioning the sky:

How can they be saved? Their deliverance, and the way.

And I see myself a guest before the Prophet,

and upon my gaze lies the draped expanse.

His lights appeared before me, and rose high

the sun of a face, its breeze cooled by the north wind.

    No question—that is Ka'b with a caravan,

and whoever seeks the beloved is in haste.

The enraptured lover languished in separation,

and the reproached young man may be shown mercy.

So he went, seeking splendor with words:

Only pardon is accepted in his presence.

And poetry poured like pure rain,

and with poetry every state is transformed.

And he donned the beloved's mantle in beauty,

and within it the poem's form is beautiful.

So slow down, Ka'b: I am with him,

and my heart is ravaged by love.

I am with him, in whose thought stand equal

roses, a sickle, and palm trees.

The two opposites live only through him:

an eater passed by, or one eaten passed on.

The universe's forest has poured forth gardens,

and the ibexes became kin to the wolves.

O Prophet of the ages, my excuse is that

my heart is burdened, and my letter is shy.

their souls' outpouring is Euphrates and Nile.

    جئتُ والجُرحُ حيثُ أسرَى الرسولُ

    I came, with Jerusalem a star in my brow;

I came, and the wound lies where the Messenger journeyed by night.

    هي قدسي.. والباقياتُ فُضولُ

    For the only path is a full moon's ascent;

it is my Jerusalem, and the rest is excess.

    طارَ.. والرّعدُ خاشعٌ مذهولُ

    He passed, and lightning was a flash from his hands;

he flew, and thunder was humbled and astounded.

Then he led the prophets in prayer,

it is Jerusalem—his home and his lodging.

And when he returns, the domes are sunrise,

and the long spring within it is seasons.

its kohl-darkened lash wanders through the soul.

The rose of fire in my blood is pride,

and the lanterns flow through my vein.
