If my heart shines forth and rejoices in remembering You,

then it is enraptured by the beloved Chosen One.

You are near, and none but You is my aim,

O You through whom I revive a lover laid waste.

And I beseech the door to send forth its light,

for unveiling is tears, insistent in supplication.

And daylight overflows within my breast; would that I

might remain yearning at its thresholds.

I weep so that remorse may wash me, after

I went too far in turning away, and estrangement ruined me,

that I may gain some of Your approval; so pardon me without

reproach, for You have forgiven and are the One who pardons.

    وَبوسْعِ فَيْضِكَ يا رجائي يُكْتَفى

    Nothing equals You in mercy and acceptance;

and Your boundless bounty, O my hope, suffices.

And for the repentant, the way of return stands open,

and for everyone who has lost hope and reached the brink,

and for whoever plunged heedlessly among people, and him through whom

his own limbs suffered, who strayed and acted unjustly.

So tomorrow He will give them dwellings in exchange for those,

where the one deemed truthful abides forever, or in luxury.

What if the heart rode into error,

and melted the night of those given to excess, never turning back,

and wished to rise toward the honey of stars,

and find enchantment in the flame when it is pure?

What if the clouds burned my fingers,

and my steps walked toward the stars in longing,

and I beat the prey's pomegranates, and it drank its fill—

my breast—while my two companions withered and wrought ruin,

and I went on wringing out my cloud within my ribs,

and forgot to remember You—or said to them, ‘Halt, you two’?

What if the cracked clay betrayed me,

and lightning snatched me away toward itself?

What if the ignorant one slipped, and I was not

turning toward You and fearful amid sin?

and I spent my days chasing my thirst,

and that milk led me astray with its blandishments,

and I kept dreaming, seduction my obsession,

and remained on the path no one follows?

How can I be saved when, as I prostrate, my Lord,

the worshipper remains lovesick for the gazelle?

O You who molded my nature upon contradiction,

show me Your path if it grows obscure and disappears.

And perhaps the time has come for repentance,

so that, when it falters, I tell it, ‘Enough.’

And perhaps I was the one who loved the heights,

and strove to fulfill the covenant of the one who kept faith.

I shall keep praising my Lord, while on my lips

is remembrance, radiant in wakefulness and slumber.

For He is the One who clothes and gives abundantly,

and without being asked, after nakedness or going barefoot.

Through Your light, my heart is an ember that never goes out,

surging, even if the universe is extinguished.

So bliss has flowed through my hands, yet I have no

credit, for Your goodness lies in giving drink and healing.

You grant refuge when refuge is sought, and are the best of those who

mend the heart, even if it has caused pain and gone to excess.

And to You I have prayed, having prostrated in surrender.

So accept my prayer, whether a tear or letters.

And I fear Your punishing might; time bears witness.

So veil a rebel, through kindness from Yourself.

And pity the frailty of one wandering heedlessly in his error,

who strives, but eyes turn him away out of chastity.

You are the everlasting God, and I have none

but You to forgive, in the open and in secret.

Yours are all creatures, and sovereignty in its entirety,

and I remain Your servant, stationed at Your door.

So when You show mercy, You are an all-embracing Lord,

and when You judge, Your justice is fair.

Yet, by the sanctity of Your countenance, I hope for

a pardon made manifest as a verse or a Qur’an.
