لاmay not دَرَّflow دَرِّيَmy milk yield إِنif أَطعَمتُI feed نازِلَكُمyour guest
قِرفَhusks الحَتِيِّdoum fruit وَعِنديand I have البُرُّthe wheat مَكنوزُstored away
May my milk never flow if I feed your guest
No harm in feeding you, though I find it distasteful,
the husks of doum fruit while I have wheat stored away.
When at home I have stores of grain piled up.
لَوif أَنَّهُthat he جاءَنيcame to me جَوعانُhungry مُهتَلِكٌnear death
مِنamong بُؤَّسِthe wretched الناسِmankind عَنهُfrom him الخَيرُgood things مَحجوزُwithheld
Had he come to me hungry and near death,
Had one who was starving and on the verge of death
one of the wretched among men, with good things withheld from him,
Come to me, from a wretched life debarred from good,
أَعياgrew exhausted وَقَصَّرَand lagged behind لَمّاwhen فاتَهُeluded him نِعَمٌblessings
يُبادِرُhe races against اللَيلَthe night بِالعَلياءِon the heights مَحفوزُurged onward
exhausted and lagging when blessings had eluded him,
He would have found me niggardly and stinting,
racing nightfall over the heights, urged onward,
Urging my mount by night towards the highlands,
حَتّىuntil يَجىءَhe comes وَجِنُّand the darkness اللَيلِof night يوغِلُهُdrives him deeper
وَالشَوكُand thorns فيin وَضَحِthe whiteness الرِجلَينِthe two feet مَركوزُembedded
until he arrived, with night's darkness driving him deeper,
Until the night patrol and gloom enfolded us
and thorns embedded in the white flesh of his feet;
And the brushwood tore my feet and legs to shreds.
قَدalready حالَinterposed itself دونَin front of دَريسَيهِhis two worn garments مُؤَوِّبَةٌa wind blowing all day
نِسعٌa north wind لَهit has بِعَضاهُamong the thorn trees الأَرضِthe land تَهزيزُa shaking
a wind blowing all day had breached his two threadbare garments,
Thorns have come between me and my camp site,
a north wind that sets the land's thorn trees shaking;
A shuddering lion with legs splayed to rip the ground.
كَأَنَّماas though بَينَbetween لَحيَيهِhis two jaws وَلَبَّتِهِand his throat's hollow
مِنfrom جُلبَةِthe clamor الجوعِhunger جَيّارٌburning inner heat وَإَرزيزُand a shivering rattle
as though between his jaws and the hollow of his throat
Between my beard and temples, from the bitterness of hunger,
there were burning heat and a shivering rattle from hunger's clamor—
Is a long-drawn wheeze and rasping hiss.
لَباتَhe would have spent the night أُسوَةَsharing the lot of حَجّاجٍHajjaj وَإِخوَتِهِand his brothers
فيin جَهدِناour hardship أَوor لَهُfor him شَفٌّan extra share وَتَمزيزُand additional portions
he would have spent the night sharing Hajjaj and his brothers' lot
He has the same exhaustion as Hajjaj and his brothers
in our hardship, or with an extra share and additional portions.
From our exertions, unless for him some indulgence and sweetmeats.
ياO لَيتَهُwould that it كانَhad been حَظّيmy share مِنof طَعامِكُماyour food (you two)
أَنّيthat I أَجَنَّconcealed سَواديmy dark form عَنكُماfrom you two الجيزُthe sand ridges
If only my share of your food had been
Would that my share of victuals from both of you
that the sand ridges had hidden my dark form from you two.
Were enough to keep my greed away from you!
إِنَّindeed الهَوانَhumiliation فَلاso let not يَكذِبكُماlie to you two أَحَدٌanyone
كَأَنَّهُas though it were فيin بَياضِthe whiteness الجِلدِthe skin تَحزيزُscored cuts
Indeed, humiliation—let no one lie to you two—
Truly, no man will gainsay you,
is like cuts scored into white skin.
As though it showed white against the skin, the brand.
ياO لَيتَwould that شِعريmy knowing وَهَمُّand the worry المَرءِa man يُنصِبُهُwearies him
وَالمَرءُand a man لَيسَis not لَهُfor him فيin العَيشِlife تَحريزُprotection
Would that I knew—and a man's worry wearies him,
Would I knew why man's dreams raise him to hope
and a man has no safeguard in life—
When man has no security at all in life.
هَلwhether أَجزِيَنَّكُماI shall surely repay you two يَوماًone day بِقَرضِكُماfor your loan (you two)
وَالقَرضُand the loan بِالقَرضِwith a loan مَجزِيٌّrepaid وَمَجلوزُand bound fast
whether I shall one day repay you two for your loan;
Shall I ever reward you for your loan
for a loan is repaid with a loan, and bound fast.
When a loan is requited by a loan agreed beforehand?
