How strange that Khawla fails to recognize me!
Or has Khawla seen an old man advanced in years,
وَكَساهُand clothed him الدَّهرُtime سِبّاًa fine cloth ناصِعاًpure white
وَكَساهُ الدَّهرُ سِبّاً ناصِعاً

وَتَحَنّى الظَّهرُ مِنهُ فَأُطِرْ
whom time has clad in a pure-white cloth,
whose back has bowed and been bent?

I am not today, over anything that has passed—
O daughter of the tribe, anything gone—regretful.

And I took my pleasure, my mind at ease,
with a guileless gazelle whose eyes were dark against their white.

He is rose-red when his coat bristles,
and dark bay while it does not bristle.

swift and sure as he hurtles onward, unflagging.
