ألاAh! قلْtell لقيسٍto Qays يبعثواlet them hold فيin بيوتهمtheir homes
ألا قلْ لقيسٍ يبعثوا في بيوتهم
مآتمَmourning gatherings تبغىseeking مطْلِعَthe rising place of الشمسthe sun عازِباone far away
مآتمَ تبغى مطْلِعَ الشمس عازِبا
Ah, tell Qays to hold in their homes
Say to Qays, they lament in their homes,
mourning gatherings, seeking one far away where the sun rises.
Grievances seeking the rising sun departing,
فتىa youth عاشlived فيin الدنياthis world حميداًesteemed ولمand did not يدعْleave
فتى عاش في الدنيا حميداً ولم يدعْ
فتىa youth بعدهafter him إلاexcept بخيلاًmiserly محاسِباcalculating
فتى بعده إلا بخيلاً محاسِبا
A youth who lived esteemed in this world, and left no
A lad lived in the world commendably and left no
youth after him but a calculating miser.
Other lad but a miser doing inventory,
فتىa youth لاnot يرىdeems الضَّرَّاءَhardship ضربةَa blow لازبٍinescapable
فتى لا يرى الضَّرَّاءَ ضربةَ لازبٍ
ولاnor المالَwealth إلاexcept مسْتَفاداacquired فواهِباthen giving it away
ولا المالَ إلا مسْتَفادا فواهِبا
A youth who did not deem hardship an inescapable blow,
A lad who sees not misfortune as a blow of chance,
nor wealth anything but something to acquire, then give away.
Nor money but something to gain and donate.
