أَلَمHave not تَرَياyou two seen أَنَّthat المَناياthe fates of death مُحيطَةٌsurrounding
بِكُلِّin every ثَناياcorners الأَرضِof the earth أَصبَحنَthey have become رُصَّداwatchmen lying in wait
Have you two not seen that the fates of death encompass
Every corner of the earth, having become watchmen lying in wait?
لَعَمريBy my life لَئِنalthough indeed أَصبَحتُI have become أَعمىblind لَقَدcertainly أُرىI see
بَصيراًsighted وَلَكِنbut لَيسَthere is not شَيءٌanything مُخَلَّداmade everlasting
By my life, though I have become blind, I once could see
With sight; but nothing is made everlasting.
And it has never ceased صَرفُthe vicissitude الدَهرِof time يَوماًa day وَلَيلَةًand a night
يَكُرّانِthe two repeatedly return against ليagainst me حَتّىuntil مَشيتُI walked مُقَيَّداshackled
The vicissitudes of time—day and night—have never ceased
Returning against me, until I walked in chains.
