And indeed we have in al-Sham—if only we could reach him—
And if in Damascus we could reach, my friend,
And truly we have in Sham, if we could but reach him,
A devoted friend of ours, O Tayyihan.
A beloved of ours, O Teyhan, bringing us together,
A friend to us, O Tayyihan, sincere and true.

We count the days for him, for love of remembering him,
We would count for him the days out of love for his memory,
We count the days for him, out of love for his memory,
And number the nights for him, O Tayyihan.
And number for him, O Teyhan, the nights.
And we number the nights for him, O Tayyihan.

So would that the mounts had borne you as you journeyed up-country,
If only the mounts could carry you up,
Would that the riding mounts had borne you up, ascending,
Traversing with their forelegs the rugged terrain and vast deserts.
Roving with you the barren deserts.
Traversing with their strides the rough terrain and deserts.
