نحنُwe بنوsons of المصطفىthe Chosen One ذووbearers of غصصchoking sorrows
نحنُ بنو المصطفى ذوو غصص
يجرعُهاhe gulps them down فيamong الأنامhumankind كاظمُناour forbearing one
يجرعُها في الأنام كاظمُنا
We are the sons of the Chosen One, bearers of choking sorrows,
We are the progeny of Mustafa, bearing sorrows
which our forbearing one gulps down among humankind.
Which our patient one gulps down among the people
عظيمةٌgreat فيamong الأنامhumankind محنتناour ordeal
عظيمةٌ في الأنام محنتنا
أوّلُناthe first of us مبتلىafflicted وآخرُناand the last of us
أوّلُنا مبتلى وآخرُنا
Great among humankind is our ordeal:
Our tribulation is mighty among mankind
the first of us is afflicted, and the last of us too.
Our first one was tried, and our last one
يفرحُrejoices هذاthis الورىhumankind بعيدهمat their festival
يفرحُ هذا الورى بعيدهم
ونحنُand we أعيادُناour festivals مآتمُناour mourning gatherings
ونحنُ أعيادُنا مآتمُنا
These people rejoice at their festival,
This world rejoices in being far from them
while our festivals are our mourning gatherings.
While our feasts are times of mourning
والناسُand people فيin الأمنsafety والسرورand joy وماyet not
والناسُ في الأمن والسرور وما
يأمنُfeels safe طولthroughout الزمانtime خائفناthe fearful one among us
يأمنُ طول الزمان خائفنا
And people live in safety and joy, yet never
People are in safety and joy, while we
does the fearful one among us feel safe throughout time.
Do not feel safe for long, living in fear
وماand what خصّصناwe were singled out بهwith it منof الشوفunclear here; possibly 'honor' الطا'the great' (first part of الطائل)
وما خصّصنا به من الشوف الطا
ئلِcompletes الطائل: 'great' بينamong الأنامhumankind آفتناour affliction
ئلِ بين الأنام آفتنا
And the great honor [uncertain reading] with which we were singled out
That which distinguished us among thehighly
among humankind is our affliction.
Yearning people is our ruin
يحكمُhe passes judgment فيناon us والحكمand judgment فيهover him لناbelongs to us
يحكمُ فينا والحكم فيه لنا
جاحدُناthe one denying us حقّناour right وغاصبُناand the one despoiling us
جاحدُنا حقّنا وغاصبُنا
He passes judgment on us, though judgment over him belongs to us—
Our denier of rights and usurper rules over us
the one who denies us our right and despoils us.
While the right to rule belongs to us
