نُراع إذا الجنائزُ قابَلَتنا
ونلهوand we amuse ourselves حينَwhen تمضيthey pass on ذاهباتِdeparting
ونلهو حينَ تمضي ذاهباتِ
We are alarmed when funeral processions meet us,
When funeral processions meet us,
and we amuse ourselves when they pass on their way,
We play joyfully as they pass by.
كرَوعةlike the terror of ثلّةٍa flock لمغارat the attack of سبعٍa beast of prey
كرَوعة ثلّةٍ لمغار سبعٍ
فلمّاthen when غابit disappeared عادتthey returned راتعاتgrazing
فلمّا غاب عادت راتعات
like a flock's terror at a beast of prey's attack;
Like a flock of gazelles before a lion's den,
then, when it disappears, they return to grazing.
When he is gone, they come back grazing.
