لَيْسَis not الغَريبُthe stranger غَريبَthe stranger of الشَّامِal-Sham واليمنِand Yemen
إِنَّindeed الغَريبَthe stranger غَريبُthe stranger of اللَّحدِthe grave-niche والكَفَنِand the shroud
The stranger is not the stranger in al-Sham and Yemen;
The stranger is not strange to Syria or Yemen,
indeed, the stranger is the stranger of the grave-niche and the shroud.
Indeed the stranger is strange to the grave and shroud.
إِنَّindeed الغَريِبَthe stranger لَهُhas حَقٌّa rightful claim لِغُرْبَتهِbecause of his estrangement
علىupon الْمُقيمينَthose residing فيin الأَوطانِthe homelands والسَّكَنِand homes
Indeed, the stranger has a claim because of his estrangement,
Indeed the stranger has a right due to his estrangement,
upon those who dwell in homelands and homes.
Upon the settled ones in homelands and dwellings.
لاdo not تَنْهَرَنَّever rebuke غَريباًa stranger حَالَduring غُربتهِhis estrangement
الدَّهْرُtime يَنْهَرَهُrebukes him بالذُّلِwith humiliation وand المِحَنِordeals
Do not rebuke a stranger during his estrangement;
Do not rebuke a stranger during his estrangement,
time rebukes him with humiliation and ordeals.
Time will rebuke him with humiliation and tribulation.
سَفْرِيmy journey بَعيدٌis long وَزاديand my provisions لَنْwill not يُبَلِّغَنيsee me through

وَقُوَتيand my strength ضَعُفَتْhas weakened والموتُand death يَطلُبُنيseeks me
My journey is long, and my provisions will not see me through;
My journey is far and my provisions will not take me far enough,
my strength has weakened, and death seeks me.
And my strength is diminished and death seeks me.
وَليand I have بَقاياremnants ذُنوبٍof sins لَسْتُI do not أَعْلَمُهاknow them

And I have sins remaining of which I am unaware;
And I have remnants of sins I do not know,
God knows them in secret and in the open.
God knows them, in private and openly.
ماhow أَحْلَمَforbearing اللهَGod عَنيtoward me حَيْثُin that أَمْهَلَنيHe granted me respite

How forbearing God is toward me, for He has given me respite,
How forgiving is God that He delayed me,
though I have persisted in my sin, and He conceals my faults.
And I persisted in my sin and He veils me.
تَمُرُّpass ساعاتُthe hours of أَيّاميmy days بِلاwithout نَدَمٍremorse

ولاnor بُكاءٍweeping وَلاخَوْفٍand no fear ولاnor حزَنِsorrow
The hours of my days pass without remorse,
The hours of my days pass without regret,
without weeping, without fear, and without sorrow.
Neither crying nor fear nor sorrow.
أَنَاI الَّذِيam the one who أُغْلِقُshut الأَبْوابَthe doors مُجْتَهِداًstriving diligently

I am the one who shuts the doors, striving diligently
It is I who closes the doors exerting effort,
at acts of disobedience, while God's eye watches me.
On sins while God's eye watches me.

Oh, a lapse recorded in a heedless moment now gone!
O slip committed in negligence that is gone,
Oh, a regret that remains in the heart, burning me!
O regret remaining in the heart burning me.

Let me lament my own soul and mourn it,
Let me moan over myself and mourn it,
and pass my time with reminders and sorrow.
And cut off fate with the reminder and grief.

Stop reproaching me, you who used to reproach me;
Stop blaming me, O you who used to blame me,
if you knew what afflicts me, you would excuse me.
If you knew what was within me you would excuse me.
دَعْنِيlet me أَسُحُّpour forth دُموعًاtears لاno انْقِطاعَcessation لَهاfor them

Let me pour forth tears without cease;
Let me wipe tears that have no end,
so might a tear among them deliver me?
Perhaps a lesson from them will save me.

It is as though I lie prostrate among most of my family,
It is as if I am among a group lying prostrate,
upon the bed, while their hands turn me over.
On the death bed and their hands tossing me.

And they gathered around me, some crying for me,
weep for me, announce my death, and mourn me.
Some weeping over me, grieving and mourning me.

And they have brought a physician to treat me,
And they brought a doctor to treat me,
but I have not seen medicine benefit me this day.
But I did not see medicine today benefit me.

My death-throes grew fierce, and death began pulling it out
My struggle intensified and death started pulling it
from every vein, without gentleness or ease.
From every vein without gentleness or ease.

And it drew the soul from me amid its death-rattle,
And it extracted the soul from me with its gargling,
and my saliva grew bitter when it made my throat rattle.
And my saliva became bitter when it gargled me.

They closed my eyes, and everyone went away and departed,
And they closed my eyes, and all left and turned away
after losing hope, and set earnestly about buying the shroud.
After despairing, and were quick to shroud me.
وَقامَand rose مَنْthe one who كانَwas حِبُّbeloved of النّاسِthe people فيin عَجَلٍhaste

And the one beloved by the people rose in haste,
And he whose love of people was swift came
toward the washer, who would come to me and wash me.
Towards the washer to come wash me.
وَقالَand he said ياO قَوْمِmy people نَبْغِيwe seek غاسِلاًa washer حَذِقاًskilled

And he said, 'O my people, we seek a skilled washer,
And he said, "O people, we need a skillful,
free, well-mannered, discerning, knowledgeable, and perceptive.'
Free, refined, knowledgeable, and wise washer."

Then a man from among them came to me and stripped me
So a man from them came and stripped me
of my clothes, left me naked, and left me alone.
Of clothes and revealed me and separated me.
وَأَوْدَعونيand they laid me عَلىupon الأَلْواحِthe boards مُنْطَرِحاًprostrate

They laid me prostrate upon the boards,
And they laid me on boards stretched out
and above me the water murmured, cleansing me.
And the trickling of water above me started cleaning me.

He poured water over me and washed me,
And he poured water over me and washed me
washing me three times, and called to the people for the shroud.
Three times and called the people for the shroud.

They dressed me in garments with no sleeves,
And they dressed me in clothes with no sleeve,
and my provisions became my funerary perfume when he perfumed me.
And my provision became my spices when they perfumed me.

They took me out of this world—oh, my sorrow
And they took me out of the world, what a pity,
for a departure with no provisions to see me through!
Upon a departure with no provision to take me far.
وَحَمَّلونيand they carried me علىupon الأْكتافِthe shoulders أَربَعَةٌfour

And they carried me upon their shoulders—four
And four men carried me on their shoulders,
of the men—with my funeral escort behind me.
And behind me were those escorting me.

They brought me forward to the prayer niche, then withdrew
And they presented me to the prayer niche and left
behind the imam, who prayed and then bade me farewell.
Behind the imam who then prayed and bade me farewell.
صَلَّوْاthey prayed عَلَيَّover me صَلاةًa prayer لاno رُكوعَbowing لهاin it

They offered a prayer over me with no bowing,
They prayed over me a prayer with no bowing or prostration,
nor prostration, that God might have mercy on me.
Perhaps God will have mercy upon me.
وَأَنْزَلونيand they lowered me إلىinto قَبريmy grave علىat مَهَلٍan unhurried pace

They lowered me gently into my grave,
And they lowered me into my grave slowly,
and brought forward one of them to place me in the grave-niche.
And sent forward one of them to lay me to rest.
وَكَشَّفَand he uncovered الثّوْبَthe cloth عَنfrom وَجْهيmy face لِيَنْظُرَنيto look at me

He drew back the cloth from my face to look at me,
And he uncovered my face to look at me
and poured tears from his eyes, drowning me.
And poured tears from his eyes drowning me.
فَقامَthen he rose مُحتَرِماًrespectfully بِالعَزْمِin resolve مُشْتَمِلاًwrapped

Then he rose respectfully, wrapped in resolve,
So he stood up determined, in a collected state,
and arranged the mud bricks above me and left me.
And lined the bricks above me and left me.

He said, 'Heap earth over him, and gain
And said, "Cover him with earth and make good
the fine reward of the All-Merciful, the giver of favors.'
Use of the reward from the Benevolent, The Bestower."

In the darkness of the grave, there is no mother there, nor
In the darkness of the grave, no mother is there,
a tender father, nor a brother to comfort me.
Nor a compassionate father or brother to befriend me.

Alone, solitary in the grave—oh, my sorrow
Alone and lonesome in the grave, what a pity,
at separation, with no deeds to provision me!
Upon the separation without deeds to provision me.
وَهالَنيand terrified me صُورَةًan image فيin العينِthe eye إِذْwhen نَظَرَتْit looked

And a sight terrified me as my eye beheld it,
And an image appeared before my eye when it saw
so dreadful was the appearance of what had stunned me:
The awfulness of the emergence of what had frightened me.

Munkar and Nakir—what shall I say to them?
Of Munkar and Nakeer, what can I say to them?
Their affair greatly terrified me and filled me with dread.
Their matter had confused me, frightening me.
وَأَقْعَدونيand they sat me up وَجَدُّواand they pressed earnestly فيin سُؤالِهمُtheir questioning
مَالِيI have no سِوَاكَbesides You إِلهيmy God مَنْanyone who يُخَلِّصُنِيdelivers me
They sat me up and pressed on with their questioning;
And they made me sit up and were harsh in questioning me,
I have no one but You, my God, to deliver me.
I have no one but You, my God, to save me.
فَامْنُنْso bestow favor عَلَيَّupon me بِعَفْوٍwith pardon مِنكfrom You ياO أَمَليmy hope

So grant me pardon from You, O my hope,
So bestow upon me, my hope, a pardon from You,
for I am fettered by sin, held in pledge.
For I am tied down by sins, mortgaged.

My family divided my wealth after they departed,
The family divided my wealth after they left,
and my burden of sin lay upon my back and weighed me down.
And my burden was placed on my back overburdening me.
واستَبْدَلَتْand took in exchange زَوجَتيmy wife بَعْلاًa husband لهاfor herself بَدَليin my place

وَحَكَّمَتْهُand she gave him authority علىover الأَمْوَالِthe wealth والسَّكَنِand the home
My wife took another husband in my place,
And my wife replaced me with another husband instead of me,
and gave him authority over the wealth and the home.
And made him judge over the money and dwelling.
وَصَيَّرَتْand she made وَلَديmy child عَبْداًa slave لِيَخْدُمَهto serve him

She made my child a slave to serve him,
And she made my son a servant to serve him,
and my wealth became lawful for them, at no cost.
And my wealth became permitted to them without price.
فَلاso do not تَغُرَّنَّكَlet deceive you الدُّنْياthe world وَزِينَتُهاand its adornment

So do not let the world and its adornment deceive you,
So do not let the world and its adornments deceive you,
and look at what it does to family and homeland.
And look at what it did to the people and homeland.

And look at one who possessed the whole world:
And look to the one who contained the whole world,
did he leave it with anything but funerary perfume and a shroud?
Did he leave except shroud and coffin?

Take contentment from your world and be satisfied with it,
Take contentment from your world and be satisfied with it,
even if you have nothing but rest for the body.
Even if you had nothing but comfort of body.

O planter of evil, dependent on weakness.
