God’s lion cub, O Sayyid Ahmad,
God's lion cub, O Master Ahmad!
God’s lion cub, O son of al-Rifa‘i.
God's lion cub, O son of al-Rifa‘i!
خلّput aside عنكaway from you النّومsleep واسعدand rejoice
خلّ عنك النّوم واسعد
فيin لياليكyour nights الوساعِspacious
في لياليك الوساعِ
Cast off sleep and be blessed
Set sleep aside and rejoice
through your spacious nights.
In your spacious nights.
كمmany a عبيدhumble servant كانwas مبعدkept far away
كم عبيد كان مبعد
وغداand became فيin السّرthe mystery واعِaware
وغدا في السّر واعِ
How many a lowly servant was kept far away,
Many a humble servant was kept far away,
then became aware of the Mystery.
And became aware of the mystery.
منwhoever غداcame فيكمamong you وأسعدand was made happy
من غدا فيكم وأسعد
حُمدتwere praised منهُfrom him المساعيthe endeavors
حُمدت منهُ المساعي
Whoever came among you and found blessedness
Whoever came among you and was made happy,
had his endeavors praised.
His endeavors were praised.
عبدكمyour servant فيin الذنبsin أبعدfar removed
عبدكم في الذنب أبعد
عنكموfrom you وليسand is not صَاغِheedful
عنكمو وليس صَاغِ
Your servant is farthest sunk in sin,
Your servant, in sin, is far removed
far from you and not hearkening.
From you, and gives no heed.
انهضواraise up بكلّwith every مقعدone unable to rise
انهضوا بكلّ مقعد
واطردواand drive away لكلّfor every باغِaggressor
واطردوا لكلّ باغِ
Raise up everyone laid low,
Raise up everyone who cannot rise,
and drive away every aggressor.
And drive away every aggressor.
نوركمyour light فيin كلّevery مسجدmosque
نوركم في كلّ مسجد
سابقoutstripping الأخوانthe brethren ساعِstriving
سابق الأخوان ساعِ
Your light, in every mosque,
Your light is in every mosque,
hastens ahead of the brethren.
Outstripping the brethren, ever striving.
ذكركمyour remembrance فيin كلّevery مرصدlookout
ذكركم في كلّ مرصد
كمhow much لكمyou have منof طولlength باعِreach
كم لكم من طول باعِ
Your name is remembered at every vantage—
Your remembrance is at every lookout;
how far indeed your reach extends!
How far your reach extends!
ياO أهيلdear folk النورthe light مددaid
يا أهيل النور مدد
لعبيدto a humble servant فيin انقِطاعِisolation
لعبيد في انقِطاعِ
O dear folk of the Light, give aid
O dear folk of light, give aid
to a lowly servant cut off from all help!
To a humble servant in isolation.
فاعطفواso show compassion عليناtoward us بالجدin earnest
فاعطفوا علينا بالجد
خيرbest ماشٍone who walks فيin البقاعِthe lands
خير ماشٍ في البقاعِ
Then turn compassionately toward us in earnest,
So show us compassion in earnest,
O best of all who walk the lands:
The best of those who walk the lands:
أحمدAhmad الهاديthe guide المؤيّدsupported
أحمد الهادي المؤيّد
بكتابby a book ذيpossessing شعاعِradiance
بكتاب ذي شعاعِ
Ahmad, the guiding one, divinely aided
Ahmad, the guide, supported
by a Book possessed of radiance.
By a book of radiance.
أعجزrendered powerless الباغيthe aggressor واقعدand laid low
أعجز الباغي واقعد
منamong فصيحan eloquent person أوor شجاعِa brave person
من فصيح أو شجاعِ
It rendered the aggressor powerless and laid him low,
He rendered the aggressor powerless and laid him low,
whether eloquent or brave.
Whether eloquent or brave.
ياO حبيبيmy beloved ياO محمّدMuhammad
يا حبيبي يا محمّد
غوثناour succor يومthe day of الضّياعloss
غوثنا يوم الضّياع
O my beloved, O Muhammad,
O my beloved, O Muhammad,
be our succor on the day of loss.
Our succor on the day of loss!
قمstand up بناfor us فيin كلّevery مقعدgathering place
قم بنا في كلّ مقعد
واحمناand protect us منfrom كلّevery ساعِstriver
واحمنا من كلّ ساعِ
Stand by us at every station,
Stand by us in every gathering,
and shield us from every pursuer.
And protect us from all who strive against us.
وكفّand restrain غدّارa treacherous one تمرّدhas rebelled
وكفّ غدّار تمرّد
ليسis not للهtoward God مُراعيheedful
ليس لله مُراعي
Restrain a treacherous betrayer who has rebelled,
And restrain the traitor who has rebelled,
who has no regard for God,
Who has no regard for God.
يطفئextinguishes النّورthe light المجدّدrenewed
يطفئ النّور المجدّد
ويشيعنّand surely spreads الابتداعِreligious innovation
ويشيعنّ الابتداعِ
who would extinguish the renewed Light
He extinguishes the renewed light
and surely spread religious innovation.
And surely spreads religious innovation.

فعلي بن محمد
يرتجيhopes for قطعending النزاعِstrife
يرتجي قطع النزاعِ
Thus Ali ibn Muhammad
So Ali, son of Muhammad,
hopes to see all strife cease.
Hopes for an end to strife.
صلاةblessing اللهGod سرمدeverlasting
صلاة الله سرمد
معwith سلامpeace باتباعيthrough my following
مع سلام باتباعي
May God’s blessing forever,
May God's everlasting blessing,
with peace following upon peace,
Along with peace, as I follow him,
تبلغreaches الهاديthe guide محمّدMuhammad
تبلغ الهادي محمّد
ماas long as تمشّىwalks ذوone possessing الكراعِthe lower leg
ما تمشّى ذو الكراعِ
reach Muhammad, the Guide,
Reach Muhammad, the guide,
as long as any legged creature walks.
As long as any creature with legs walks.
